Just to make sure everyone gets a proper thanks... Back in mid- to late-2006, Bryan helped me quite a bit to build the Piccal concept. He spent many hours coaching me on the ASP.NET language which BoBoswell.com is based. James has always been a big help with everything computer-related and with each of my websites, and most recently the Piccal. Both of them have always been happy to take the time to help me out and answer my questions; at times they've even had to take over and do the job for me. None of the websites that I own would be possible without these two gems. Thank you both, James and Bryan, for being such good and generous friends...and thank you James for not being as big an asshole as Bryan. |

Turner has too many meals to define. He has breakfast, then second breakfast before his mid-morning nap. Then he's got lunch, then there's assisting lunch. If he's playing hard he'll get a mid-afternoon sippy cup, just after his midday snack. This may or may not happen before his afternoon nap. Then he'll have dinner #1 and then dinner #2 while Traci and I are having our dinner/supper. Finally Turner has supper before going to bed, but only after playing with his belly in the bathtub.

Here's how I typically refer to the meals of my day: Breakfast Lunch Dinner/Supper The words "dinner" and "supper" are interchangeable. Here are some definitions according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary: Lunch A usually light meal; especially one taken in the middle of the day Dinner The principal meal of the day Supper The evening meal especially when dinner is taken at midday It's clear from the definitions that "Dinner" can be easily interchanged for "Lunch" or "Supper." However, I've been using "Lunch" to signify a midday meal since I can remember. Which means I was brought up this way by you, boon. To qualify its legitimacy we have to look at the word "brunch" (I hate this word) which is defined as, "a meal usually taken late in the morning that combines a late breakfast and an early lunch." The reason that "Dinner" is associated with "Supper" for me is that the last meal of the day is usually the biggest. Unless I go out to eat lunch with someone, I am usually eating a sandwich. Dinner/Supper is always more substantial. I doubt this is something that will change as it's too far ingrained into my being. "Lunch" has always been the midday meal for me. I went to school with "lunch money", not "dinner money." I carried a "lunchbox," not a "dinnerbox." At this point, I could care less how the terms originated in the middle ages. I'm more concerned with how they were introduced to my life in the 1980s in Winchester, TN; that's the rural history that has impacted my life more directly. |
